Polo rules

The game needs:

  • Concrete court, marked out by wall or fence.
  • 6 Mallets
  • 2 Streethockeyballs (one for game play)
  • 2 goals (the lenght of a bicycle) with traffic cones
  • 6 Players to play a match (3 in each team)
  • PENALTY POINT for players after offence
  • 1 or 2 referees

The general rules:

  • The ball is placed in the centre of the court at the start
  • Players have to line up behind their goal line
  • Riders can ATTACK the ball after the referee counted down 3, 2, 1, GO!
  • A score can only be made with the open end of the mallet
  • A score is cancelled when the ball is played with the flat end of the mallet. A shuffle does not count as a goal; if the ball is shuffled through the goal, play continues uninterrupted.
  • The first team scoring 5 goals wins, (preliminaries are played with a 15 minute max. rule per game),
  • After each score, the team who was scored on takes possession of the ball
  • After a goal is scored, the team who scored returns to their half of the court.
  • Passing backward through the goal (from behind the goal line to in front of it, through the goal, a.k.a. goal offsides): When the ball is passed through the goal in this way, a goal CANNOT be scored by the first player to play the ball. Any subsequent player to play the ball may score. If a ball is shot from in front of the goal line and does not go through the goal but bounces off the back wall and comes out through the goal, the ball is in play and can be scored.
  • Mallets are to be held in either left or right hand but can be switched during the game
  • Mallets cannot be thrown to prevent scoring
  • If a rider’s foot touches ground or ball, he has to go to the sideline and touch the PENALTY POINT
  • Any type of bicycle is allowed. Handlebars must be plugged.
  • If a goal is disruped it is the responsability of the player who disruped it to fix it.
  • Each team is entitled to 1 Three-Minute-Time-Out during play,
  • Wearing a helmet is mandatory, spare helmets will be provided by Fuccit when player is a poor or cheap bastard.

Contact rules:

  • Like contact is allowed. Player to player (body to body), except grabbing or pushing with hands.
  • Mallet to mallet (generally, hitting another player’s mallet is poor etiquette if that player is not attempting to play the ball or in front of the goal, playing goalie).
  • Bike to bike.
  • Everything else is NOT allowed: Mallet to player, player to bike, mallet to bike, etc.

Safety rules:

  • All handlebars must be plugged. Mallets too.
  • No T-Boning!
  • To deliberately or carelessly crash into another rider will result in PENALTY POINT by referee’s call.
